About Guangzhou Soul Project

Guangzhou Soul Project was founded by "swinging diplomat" Martin Fleischer, in order to offer to the audience a unique musical genre, distinct from both mainstream jazz and from ordinary pop music. The band revives mainly hits from the 60s and 70s with soul-jazz and jazz-rock rhythms, making oldies sound fresh and danceable.

While Martin's work brought him to Asia, Europe, Africa, America and three times to China, he set up a jazz band on each of his posts. When he first came to Beijing, he made friends and performed with the "first generation" of Chinese jazz and rock musicians, such as Liu Yuan and Cui Jian. Now, serving as German Consul General in Guangzhou, he began first working with the "second generation", mostly music college teachers. In 2018 he set up the "Guangzhou Soul Project" with a "third generation" of young professionally trained jazz musicians, performing regularly in JZ Jazz Club, at festivals and special events. Music has been instrumental to Martin for maintaining friendships all over the world, and for engaging socially by playing on charity concerts or even dedicating an entire album to a good cause.
